„WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER “–it is the slogan of this year’s Rare Disease Day, which is commemorated annually on 28 February in more than 100 countries around the world. The day is supposed to raise awareness and bring change to the 300 million people worldwide who are currently facing one of the 6,000 named rare diseases. The Czech Republic is not behind in this topic and the Institute of Pharmacology at Masaryk University has been taking action steps for several years to improve research and find solutions for specific diseases, either through research itself or by coordinating the CZECRIN and the newly formed project CREATIC.
A specific example of a unit dedicated to research in the field of rare diseases is the ACIU Advanced Cellular Immunotherapy Unit at Masaryk University. This is a non-commercial unit that is currently developing two of its own products. There is a treatment for patients with the rare congenital disease epidermolysis bullosa (EB), also known as butterfly children disease. The existence of this study is also possible thanks to the support of the CZECRIN.
