High school students search for lost pharmacology professor
The drug pathway was one of the topics that the Institute of Pharmacology offered to high school students as an educational seminar under the auspices of the LF MU Junior Academy.
This topic has long been linked to the research focus of the Institute of Pharmacology and the research infrastructure CZECRIN.
The programme of the seminar included theory explaining the different stages of research and development of new drugs as well as a separate practical part. In the technical part, students listened to lectures that gave them a comprehensive picture of what types of drugs exist and the most common methods to discover them. They learned what preclinical research is, pharmacovigilance
and the principles of pricing a new drug. To get students actively involved, an escape game on the topic of clinical trials was also prepared for them. The students’ task was to find the lost professor of pharmacology. During the search, the high school students inadvertently learned the different phases of clinical trials and how patients are enrolled in these trials.
Furthermore, they got acquainted with different dosage forms and last but not least, they prepared the evaluated medicinal product themselves in the laboratories of the Institute of Pharmacology.
“Due to the positive feedback, we are planning to offer new dates of the seminar to other high school students” adds the seminar’s guarantor PharmDr. Lenka Součková, Ph.D.
