Behind the launch of any new drug on the market are many years of development, preclinical and clinical research. It is a challenging, complex and very costly drug journey that does not always end in success. On the contrary, most of the drugs tested do not obtain their marketing authorisation precisely because they fail to meet the strict quality, efficacy and safety requirements during preclinical and clinical trials. Clinical trial sponsors and researchers are aware of this and are trying to reverse this unfortunate situation. Throughout the history of drug development and research, we have witnessed a number of sub-stories that have significantly influenced the current way of testing drugs and that have contributed significantly to the safety of clinical trial participants, but also to the credibility of clinical trial results.
