The first international multicenter study straddling the very line between life and death

It is precisely in such extreme situations that the new international clinical study OSIRIS aims to provide answers, drawing on the extensive experience and many years of practice of Professor Jan Bělohlávek and his team at the General University Hospital in Prague (VFN).
In July, the site at the General University Hospital (VFN) was the first to become operational; it also serves as the study’s coordination center. The implementation is led by Jan Bělohlávek, Daniel Rob, Petra Kaválková, and other team members. Karolína Grodová and Petr John from CZECRIN, who helped prepare and launch the center, also attended the study’s kickoff.
OSIRIS is the first study of its kind to compare survival and quality of life in patients following refractory cardiac arrest—that is, in situations where standard resuscitation procedures fail.
📍 As part of the study, CZECRIN provides comprehensive support and coordination for the participating centers —from project management and monitoring through data management (Tomáš Machulka, Kateřina Fröhlich) to statistical analysis (Adam Svobodník).
📍 The study is also seeking funding from the prestigious European ERA4HEALTH program. Any funding received would significantly strengthen the study’s implementation and underscore its European significance.
If the OSIRIS study demonstrates that ECPR increases the chances of survival and improves subsequent quality of life, it could fundamentally change the approach to caring for the most critically ill patients.
