DONETs

Why Disease-Oriented Networks make sense

How DONETs support the quality of clinical research, collaboration across disciplines and the translation of results into clinical practice.

Why are DONETs important?

DONETs are a key tool for the development of clinical research in the Czech Republic. Their importance lies not only in improving the quality of clinical trials, but also in creating an environment that connects experts, infrastructure and methodological support across disciplines.

The main benefits of DONETs

  • Enhance the quality and efficiency of clinical research – DONETs provide a coordinated environment in which research teams can share expertise, methodological expertise and logistical support, thereby enhancing the quality and quality of studies.
  • They connect experts and centres across the Czech Republic – thanks to the interconnected network of centres, research capacities are used more efficiently and allow to address key clinical issues within the framework of national collaboration.
  • Support independent non-commercial studies – DONETs enable the creation and implementation of clinical trials that are not driven by commercial interests but reflect the needs of clinical practice and patients.
  • They increase the availability of professional and methodological capacities – through CZECRIN, researchers have access to biostatistical, regulatory, data and project support.
  • They support international collaboration – DONETs are part of the European research infrastructure ECRIN-ERIC through CZECRIN, which allows Czech teams to participate in or coordinate international clinical trial projects.
  • They ensure sustainability and development of research – creating a stable framework for the design, preparation and implementation of studies, strengthening the sharing of know-how and facilitating the long-term development of health research capacity.

Key roles and benefits of DONETs

DONETs are professional networks of clinical sites that connect researchers from across the Czech Republic in priority medical areas.
They support the creation, coordination and implementation of independent clinical trials in a shared, methodologically driven and professionally supported environment.

Under the umbrella of the national research infrastructure CZECRIN, DONETs connect clinical and academic sites that jointly develop research that responds to real needs of clinical practice and brings measurable value to patients and the healthcare system.

Identify research topics

based on real clinical practice and reflecting current challenges in diagnosis, therapy and patient care.

Provide a platform for validating research proposals

from the initial idea to the design of a specific study – and support their development into projects with national and international reach.

Encourage open professional discussion

between clinicians, researchers and patient organisations to help formulate clinically relevant questions and meaningful research objectives.

They establish and strengthen a network of collaborating clinical and academic institutions,

which jointly conduct research in key areas such as oncology, neurology, cardiology, pulmonology, intensive care medicine and perinatology.

They ensure expert and methodological background

for all phases of research – from study design, through regulation, data management, monitoring to pharmacovigilance – in collaboration with the National Clinical Trials Centre and other expert units of the CZECRIN infrastructure.

They support patient-oriented clinical trials,

that are not driven by commercial interests, but answer questions with a direct impact on clinical practice and the quality of patient care.

They use real-world data (RWD)

to create real-world evidence (RWE) that complements the evidence from clinical trials with experience from clinical practice.

They strengthen national and international cooperation

and connect Czech workplaces to European and global research structures.
